Sign Up For “Twitter”

And Receive Important Band Updates on Your Phone!

Trying to make your life a little easier when it comes to Band updates is what Twitter is all about. By signing up to follow the Prattville Band on Twitter, you will have the ability to get instant last-­‐minute information on your phone as a text message. In order to get activated to follow the Band on Twitter, we ask you to do the following ...

1.   Sign up for a Twitter account
  
2. Go to ‘settings’ on your account and “Protect Your Tweets” (this requires anyone to get your permission before they can follow you on Twitter)

     TO DO THIS ...
     a.  Click on your user name (top right hand corner of your Twitter page)
     b.  Scroll down and click on "Settings"

     c.  Scroll down that page to where you see "Protect My Tweets" - click on that box

     d.  Scroll Down a little more and click "Save"

3. Go to “Find People” in the menu at the top of your Twitter page and find “prattvilleband” If you have not protected your tweets before now, then you may not realize that anyone can follow you without having to gain your approval. This is especially true for certain porn entities ... they will click to follow you and once that is done, they then have access to lists of people whom you follow, or who follow you ... including the band.

4. Send keithpat@earthlink.net an email message within 24 hours of asking to follow the band on Twitter. In the email, tell us (a) who you are, (b) what your username is, (c) and if you are a parent of a band student, who that band student is. The reason for this is simply in an attempt to control ‘who’ follows the band on Twitter, we have restricted followers to current band students, band parents, and band boosters. Keith will wait 24 hours to hear from you via email before blocking or activating your request to follow the band. If, after 24 hours, the requests listed above have not been followed, you will be blocked from following the band.

5. Follow Twitter instructions on how to set up your phone to receive text messages from Twitter

NOTE: Please understand that we set these requirements in an attempt to protect your family and all of our band kids. Sadly, in the world we live in, there are people who set out to do things that would hurt our kids, and this is true of the Twitter community.

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR TWITTER:

* Go to www.twitter.com

* Click on the "Get Started -­‐ Join!" icon

* Fill in all the information down to the "Create my account"

* If no one has your username, etc. it will take you to an page that says "See if your friends are on Twitter" -­‐ fill in the password you entered on the previous page and hit 'continue''

* Once that page loads, click on the "Find People" link at the top of the page

* When that page loads, there should be a box with "Who are you looking for?" above it...type 'prattvilleband' in the box

* When that page loads, you will see the band logo with "prattvilleband / Prattville High Band ....." Click on the "Follow" box

* Next, you need to send an email message to keithpat@earthlink.net and in the body of the message type what your user name is, who you are, and if you are a band member or a parent (if you are a parent, please let us know who your band student is). (NOTE: If you forget to send the email within 24 hours of requesting to ‘follow’ Prattvilleband, you will be blocked from following.)

* Wait a little while (until I receive the notice about you wanting to follow Prattvilleband) ... I have to click 'allow' then you have to go to your settings and turn on your 'device'

HOW DO I GET TWITTER SENT TO MY PHONE AS A TEXT MESSAGE:

* Go to your Twitter home page and click on 'settings'


* Next, click on 'Devices"


* You will see "Mobile Phone" and instructions underneath. Basically, you type +1areacodephonenumber ... for me it was +13345462168 ... also check the little box that says it's okay for Twitter to sent txt messages to your phone. Then click 'save'


* You will get a code that you have to text from your cell phone to the number 40404.


* When you do that, and it is approved, you need to go to devices again and turn on the device. (This is the step that most people are missing. If you need help doing this, contact Keith at 365-­‐2168)

SUGGESTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS FOR TWITTER:

•  Periodically you will receive a request to allow someone to follow you on Twitter. Before allowing them to follow you make sure you know them. My policy is simple; if I do not know them then it doesn’t make sense as to ‘why’ they would want to follow me.

•  Some people think it’s cool to see how many people you can get to follow you, and thus, will accept anyone who request to follow them. If you’re not sure who they are, all you have to do is click on their username under ‘request to follow’ and it will take you to their site. Look at their site and if you see a link to another web site, check it out and see where it takes you. (You will be surprised what you will find) 


•  REMEMBER, THERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU WILL BE DECLINED TO FOLLOW THE BAND:

1.            You forget to protect your ‘tweets’

2.            You forget to send Keith an email letting him know it’s really you requesting to follow the band on 
Twitter.
